I am a runner, wife and mom on a mission to maintain the running lifestyle while balancing everything else in life, including family, career and wellness. This mission has fueled a passion and a tendency for analysis — what do you think about this, what do you think about that, I wonder what this person has to say about this — that has led me to start thought provoking conversations with talented professionals and everyday runners about the best ways a runner-wife-mom like me can just keep running. It wasn’t always this way. I know what it’s like to not want to get off of the couch and turn off the TV. From the couch, I became an off and on runner, which led to training for my second half marathon and subsequent six half marathons and three marathons.
Running has taught me a lot. It’s taught me how my point of view and how I look at running impacts how I see other things. I’ve learned how to look at running as a gift rather than as something I do solely to burn calories.
The most important thing running has taught me is that running isn’t about being the fastest person in my age group – even though I would be really excited if I ever placed in my age group and have a lot of respect for people who do! Running is also not about pushing my body beyond a healthy state!
Running, for me, is a journey. It’s also about the contradiction – the endorphin high running provides that at the same time also makes you feel more grounded.
Running is a way to take care of this vehicle for life called my body and mind. My desire to run better and for longer leads me to make healthier choices all around. And the movement through outdoor space causes me to see many new things, connecting me to my environment.
The gift of The Running Lifestyle is that me/my becomes us/our. Our individual running experiences will become threads in a big tapestry of shared experiences from which we can draw the energy and inspiration we need to keep on running, while balancing everything else.
